Balakanda - Sarga 29
Discover the ancient tale of Vamana's triumph, Viswamitra's spiritual journey, and Rama's arrival at Siddhashrama. Witness the interplay of gods, demons, and mortals in this epic Ramayana passage.
Viswamitra, the great sage, began to explain the story of the forest to Rama, the man of immeasurable prowess. He said:
"O mighty-armed Rama, Lord Vishnu, the foremost among the gods and a great ascetic, lived here for countless years and hundreds of yugas (eras) to perform yogic practices and penance. This place was formerly the hermitage of the glorious Vamana (the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu). It is known as Siddhashrama because the great ascetic succeeded in his practices here."
During this time, King Bali, son of Virochana, conquered the gods, including:
Indra (the king of gods)
The Maruts (wind gods)
Other deities
Bali became famous in all three worlds (heaven, earth, and the underworld) for his prowess and generosity. While he was performing a great sacrifice to confirm his position as lord of the three worlds, the gods approached Lord Vishnu at this hermitage. Agni (the fire god) led the divine delegation.
The gods addressed Vishnu:
"O Vishnu, Bali, son of Virochana, is performing an excellent sacrifice. We need your help before its completion. Bali grants whatever the seekers ask for, regardless of their origin or desire. For the welfare of the gods, please:
Assume a form through your power of illusion (maya)
Take the form of a dwarf
Perform this supreme, auspicious act"
Meanwhile, the sage Kashyapa, resplendent as fire, along with his wife Aditi, completed a thousand divine years of austerities. Pleased with their penance, Kashyapa praised Madhusudana (Vishnu), the bestower of boons:
"O Purushottama (Supreme Being), through my intense penance, I see you as:
The essence of asceticism
The embodiment of penance
The container of the entire universe within your body
You are beginningless and indescribable. I take refuge in you."
Pleased with Kashyapa, Vishnu said, "Ask for a boon, for you are worthy."
Kashyapa replied:
"O Vararha (bestower of boons), O Suvrata (man of excellent vows), please:
Be born as a son to Aditi and me
Become the younger brother of Indra
Help these sorrow-stricken gods
Let this place be known as Siddhashrama by your grace"
Then, the resplendent Vishnu was born from Aditi's womb. Assuming the form of Vamana (the dwarf), he approached Bali, the son of Virochana.
Continuing his tale, Viswamitra recounted Vamana's triumph:
Vamana, the dwarf incarnation of Vishnu, approached King Bali.
He requested three paces of land, which Bali granted.
Vamana then revealed his cosmic form.
With three steps, he covered all the worlds.
The mighty Vamana:
Restrained Bali with his divine energy
Reclaimed the three worlds (heaven, earth, and the underworld)
Returned the dominion to Mahendra (Indra, the king of gods)
Viswamitra explained to Rama, "This ashrama (hermitage) was first occupied by Vamana. Now, out of devotion to him, I reside in this place that dispels fatigue."
Viswamitra continued, addressing Rama:
"O purusha-vyaghra (tiger among men), wicked rakshasas (demons) often come to this ashrama to cause obstacles. These evil-doers must be slain right here.
Now, let us proceed to the excellent Siddhashrama. O child, consider this ashrama as your own, just as it is mine."
As Viswamitra entered the hermitage:
He shone like the moon emerging from mist
He appeared to be in conjunction with the Punarvasu star (a celestial event considered auspicious)
The resident ascetics of Siddhashrama:
Saw Viswamitra approach
Immediately rose to greet him
Offered him reverent worship
The ascetics:
Extended fitting honors to the wise Viswamitra
Offered the same warm hospitality to both princes (Rama and Lakshmana)
After a brief rest, Rama and Lakshmana, the destroyers of enemies and pride of Raghu's race, addressed Viswamitra (the tiger among sages) with folded palms.
Rama and Lakshmana said to Viswamitra:
"O foremost of ascetics:
Please commence the diksha (initiation ceremony) today itself
May you prosper in your endeavors
May this Siddhashrama attain perfection through your presence
May your words come to fruition"
Hearing this respectful request, the great sage Viswamitra:
Entered the initiation ceremony
Engaged in sacred religious observances
Restrained his senses in deep meditation
The two princes:
Spent the night with composed minds
Awoke at daybreak
Performed their morning ablutions:
Touched water for ritual purification
Recited prayers according to prescribed rules
Completed their daily religious observances
Paid homage to Viswamitra, who was seated by the sacrificial fire (agnihotra)
Thus ends the twenty ninth sarga (chapter) of Balakanda (The Book of Youth) of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
